The real story didn’t surface until now because too many people in the intertwined news and entertainment industries had too much to gain from Mr. Weinstein for too long. Across a run of more than 30 years, he had the power to mint stars, to launch careers, to feed the ever-famished content beast. And he did so with quality films that won statuettes and made a whole lot of money for a whole lot of people.

Sharon Waxman, a former reporter for the New York Times, said on Womens Womens Chuck Taylor All Star Canvas Sneakers Converse WaPUrOIr
that the New York Times itself belonged on that list:

I simply gagged when I read Jim Rutenberg’s sanctimonious piece on Saturday about the “media enablers” who kept this story from the public for decades…That’s right, Jim. No one — including The New York Times. In 2004, I was still a fairly new reporter at The New York Times when I got the green light to look into oft-repeated allegations of sexual misconduct by Weinstein…The story I reported never ran.

After intense pressure from Weinstein, which included having Matt Damon and Russell Crowe call me directly to vouch for Lombardo and unknown discussions well above my head at the Times, the story was gutted. I was told at the time that Weinstein had visited the newsroom in person to make his displeasure known. I knew he was a major advertiser in the Times, and that he was a powerful person overall.

Weinstein’s alleged pressuring of the New York Times —and his ability to influence the media generally — rested on the fact that the media is also a gatekeeper. The New York Times still brags as such in its print edition:

“All the News That’s Fit to Print” is rather clear about how the New York Times’ views itself: the arbiter — that is gatekeeper — of what news ought to be consumed by the public. In truth, though, by 2004 that gatekeeper role was already breaking down; perhaps the most famous example involved another set of allegations of sexual misconduct, when in 1998 the ankle boots Black Sergio Rossi BgzaZU2emB
the news that Newsweek wouldn’t:

The gate could not hold.

After Waxman’s post, New York Times’ editor-in-chief Dean Baquet argued that “it is unimaginable” that her story was killed due to pressure from Weinstein; in fact, though, an examination of the structure of the newspaper business suggests it is quite imaginable.

In 2004 , the New York Times had $3.3 billion in revenue, up 2.4% year-over-year. That increase, though, belied deeper problems: circulation had dropped a percentage point year-over-year; revenue growth came from a 6% increase in adverting rates. Advertising was the New York Times’ primary revenue source, accounting for 66% of total revenue, and given that in 2003 the average Hollywood movie spent an average of $34.8 million in advertising, some portion of that undoubtedly came from Weinstein specifically.

The reason that circulation decline suggested a problem is that the ability of the New York Times and other newspapers to command advertising depended on being a gatekeeper: advertisers didn’t take out newspaper ads because they loved newspapers, they took out newspaper ads because it was an effective way to reach potential customers:

General Dynamics holds a variety of contracts tied to immigrant detention and monitoring, including case management and “infrastructure services for unaccompanied minors” at the border. And they are looking to expand. The company is advertising for new jobs, including a data-entry position within the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) that will monitor children’s’ cases as they move through the system, a position involving ORR policy analysis, and a position tracking “ tracking “new placements and progress of minors in ORR funded care.”

Comprehensive Health Services, Dynamic Service Solutions, and Dynamic Educational Systems

Additionally, Yahoo News has identified a trio of companies – Comprehensive Health Services, Dynamic Service Solutions, and Dynamic Educational Systems – that have been provided lucrative contracts for shelter operations and services in recent months.

Comprehensive Health Services has won the most work, by far, with three contract awards worth up to $65 million since September 2017 for emergency shelter operations and support services. Company CEO Gary Palmer is a former executive at defense contractors Lockheed Martin and Martin Marietta, where he oversaw international business development in Australia and Saudi Arabia.

The Wall Street banks that finance them all

A slew of big banks finance the companies that profit from immigrant and family detention – and profit, in turn, from these lucrative lending arrangements. The credit these banks extend to these companies will be especially important as they look to continue growing their operations under Trump’s zero-tolerance and family detention policies. Additionally, these financial institutions – as well as large money managers like BlackRock – are also significant investors in the stock of publicly-held corporations.

While many of the above-named contractors are not consumer-facing companies, the financial institutions that make their operations possible include some of the largest consumer banks in the U.S.

SunTrust, MVM Inc., and Comprehensive Health Services

SunTrust Bank has a major lending arrangement with MVM, according to a 2016 UCC filing . While the exact amount of the loan is not revealed, the loan is secured by “all assets of debtor,” which means it is likely significant.

Additionally, a March 2018 UCC filing shows that SunTrust is also involved in a major lending arrangement with Comprehensive Health Services, secured by “All assets of the Debtor, whether now owned or hereafter acquired.”

Did anyone mention you on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is continuing on rolling out a range of new features starting with mentions. Think of them like idly dropping someone or some organization into your interactions, a little like adding in a Twitter handle on Twitter.

This new feature hails towards making LinkedIn more interactive and engaging with your connections and the others that you interact with on your home page. This is a new feature but builds on the existing status message functionality (see this old blog post ) enabling you to flag someone’s name or organisation within the status message, comments or interaction on status messages that you share with your own network. A great way to build those relationships!

As soon as you start typing an individual or organisations name in your status it will pop up a pick list for you to choose from, see below

As soon as you mention someone in your status or that of others they will receive a notification (just like you get for interactions, messages and invites) so they are aware of it instantly, thus enabling them to continue the “conversation” within LinkedIn or outside of it over a telephone or coffee (my preference!).

Instructions for Mentions in LinkedIn Status Updates

1. From your status update box (top of your LinkedIn Homepage next to your photograph) just start typing the name of a connection or company you wish to mention in your status updateamongyour normal status message.

2. As soon as you start typing a name the drop-down box will appear with a list of connections / companies. Simply select the connection or company you wish to include in your comment or status update and that’s it!

3. After finishing your comment or status update, the mentioned company or person will receive a notification alerting them that they have been mentioned on LinkedIn. It’s as easy as that!

4. Note: You can even mention 2nd connections that already engaged in the comments section of posts on your LinkedIn homepage. This makes it nice and easy to start conversations with people who youaren’tconnected to using this functionality.

Despite the divorce of LinkedIn by Twitter back in July 2012 mentions will “translate” your mentions of individuals names on using the feature will automatically translate to their Twitter names within Twitter, very neat!

LinkedIn said in its release announcement of the mentions feature that there is more to come, rumours are rife and include a range of new potential functionality – be interesting to see what they release next.

My bet is on a positioning / GIS tie in, as it is weak in this area, what would you like to see in LinkedIn as the new feature?

LinkedIn seems to moving very speedily in the right direction here. It’s not a feature, but I’d like to see changes in the mobile app to enable more advanced functionality via mobiles.
